Summer Wars and How to Train Your Dragon

There are many interesting animation movies these days but one that really caught my eye recently came from Japan – and it isn’t a Hayou Miyazaki film either.

The movie is Summer Wars and it’ll be coming to DVD in the United States very soon. Check out the trailer:

It really is an engaging story and the animation is very good. Be sure to add it to your Netflix queue.

Also, in theaters now is How to Train Your Dragon from Dreamworks and it is a very good tale with nice animation and a very nice story with good characters. It’s even pulling a 90+ rating at Rotten Tomatoes (that’s a very good score by the way). Here’s a good trailer for How to Train Your Dragon:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Animation provides a vehicle for stories that can go beyond what can be presented in live action. You just have to get used to the format a little…

Star Wars: Uncut

So there’s a project brewing in a galaxy not too far away… it’s a fan made version of Star Wars – but you only get to add 15 seconds!

Magical Trailer: Miyazaki’s Ponyo

Hayao Miyazaki creates some of the most stunning animation and imaginative storytelling including movies Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle just to name a few. Miyazaki’s latest release to come to the United States is Ponyo (full title: Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea).

If you haven’t seen any of his other works I highly recommend them… they are generally family friendly and are truly … well… magical.

Trailer: Tron 2, TR2N, Tron Legacy – Flynn Lives!

The sequal to Tron is in production and this past weekend at Comic-Con they showed a trailer. Yup… Light Cycles are back!

The names passed around for the new movie were Tron 2 and TR2N, but it seems they’ve settled on Tron Legacy.

Daybreakers

The movie is called Daybreakers and stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. I’m not a big vampire fan, but this looks like a very cool movie.

I have to admit, the fact that it’s sci-fi styled and has Sam Neill in it is probably a big reason why I think it’s cool looking.

Blood: The Last Vampire (Live Action)

Blood: The Last Vampire is a manga turned anime movie and then anime series. Now it is being produced as a live action film. Sometimes these translations in media work out and sometimes they don’t… This one at least looks like it has the right backing and could be very cool to see (trailer below).
