YouTube In HD

YouTube has changed their site around a little bit in the past couple days. A few days ago they changed their image format from standard (4:3) to widescreen (16:9) and today they’ve turned on HD. This means when you go to a video on YouTube you’ll see an option to turn on either “High Quality” or “HD”.

Here are a couple comparative screenshots from the “Where the Hell is Matt” video which is available in both normal and HD versions.

As you can see the difference is pretty obvious and it is even more obvious when you watch these videos in full screen.

A word of warning.  HD is very bandwidth intensive so remember that more quality equals more data to download or stream. If you have bandwidth caps or a slower connection you may want to skip the HD quality for now.

This seems like an update related directly to Hulu and Vimeo higher quailty offerings which have been drawing people away from YouTube even as YouTube begins hosting more content (like movies and TV shows).

It seems workplaces will see even larger bandwidth spikes around lunchtime now.

That’s cool, but I didn’t see on my pc… maybe it’s only for certain videos?

Correct. It is only available on videos that were uploaded in HD. This also holds true for the “High Quality” switch in the same location for some videos as well.

That is quite a cool option.

But i don’t like the new search function they put in posted videos on other sites. It just feels weird.

anyway, cool side got to love the geeks
