It Was Pirates! Really!
TorrentFreak is reporting on an interesting trendthat is occurring lately: blaming pirates for leaked media as a way to get publicity or for grass roots campaigns. In this case the band BuckCherry blamed pirates for leaking their newest album on BitTorrent before it was released and then held a press conferenceabout the issue. TorrentFreak thought this sounded a bit odd and after doing some investigation (see the article for details) found that the original leak came from the band’s management. It usually isn’t good for a band’s reputation with its fans to be caught in a lie designed for self promotion.
I don’t talk about pirating or file sharing much because it’s such a complicated issue and it isn’t very relevant since the vast majority of people aren’t pirates. I will say this though: when you hear news reports about Peer-to-Peer (P2P), file sharing, BitTorrent, or general pirating being the cause for problems or loss of money be sure to take it with a grain of salt.
