Google Sites Opens Today

Google Sites opened today with minor fanfare; probably because it is only available to Google Apps users.

Ars Technica has a good run down on the basic features (I don’t have an Apps account so can’t see it directly myself), but at its core it is a collaborate site service similar to Microsoft Sharepoint. Google Sites allows users to easily share information and media in a centrally managed location through an easily navigated web interface. Sounds exciting, I know, but for small businesses or groups that have Google Apps, this is an excellent way of providing shared content without having to deal with tons of correspondence or 3rd party services. The Google Site is directly linked to your Google Apps account so it can interact with calendaring, email, Docs, Picasa and IM as well as providing this information in a “from any internet connection” capacity.

It looks like there will likely be some growing pains as the kinks get worked out and integration becomes more seamless, but it is definitely going to add to Google’s ability to provide a low cost (almost zero cost) alternative to Microsoft Office products most commonly used in the work place.
