English As Common Language But Not Common Understanding
Ars Technica relates an issue where English is becoming the common language of business, but without cultural context people may still be misunderstood. It is something well worth remembering not only for business but also for travel. Think about how easy miscommunication happens with friends and family; then tack on a completely different native language and cultural background and you can see how easy it would be to make a faux pas.
One thing I always try to remember when communication gets difficult when speaking with someone that has learned English as a second language – I didn’t learn their language so I should give them as much patience as I can since they made the effort to speak to me in my language, even though I’m in their country.
