Cellular Freedom: Cell Phone Empowerment Act of 2007

Ars Technica has an excellent article about the upcoming Cell Phone Empowerment Act of 2007.

The highlights of what the bill will address:

  • No fees beyond local/state/federal fees – this is to cut down on “hidden” fees.
  • Contract termination fees will be prorated
  • Many contract restrictions and practices would be made clearer
  • Service availability and reliability information would be detailed and publicly available

This would make using cellular services much more convenient and allow for more freedom of choice.

Hopefully, we’ll be allowed to have officially unlocked phones soon as well so we can use whichever phone we want on whichever compatible service we want.
