Britney Spears VMA: Internet Snafu
There are lots of reports about Britney’s performance at the VMA’s this year. It was supposed to be an exhilarating return for Britney Spears.
It wasn’t. It was awful; really, really bad lip syncing with almost zombie like dance movies and she looked like she took 3 too many Valium with a NyQuil chaser.
That’s not the geek side of the story though (beyond the schadenfreude anyways) . The Machinist has an excellent article about how you can’t find the video online at the usual sources because Viacom is fighting hard to keep it exclusive to MTV.com. The Machinist article points out many reasons this is a bad move on Viacom’s part – but the basics are that any “buzz” that could really be created for MTV and Viacom is lost because there is no way to spread the word! Loss off buzz means loss of visitors to their website – and that means loss of advertising dollars.
It was a big search hit too, and when nobody could find significant results… people stopped looking. A search doesn’t even turn up the MTV.com site where you actually can watch the video! Viacom’s “it’s ours and you can’t have it” attitude really bit them in the butt. Be sure to read the article at The Machinist for more knuckleheadedness from Viacom. It helps explain why internet buzz is a good thing – even if it isn’t a flattering news item.

I found it on MySpace.com Videos and as a torrent file, but you’re right! It’s nearly wiped out everywhere else. Someone was just commenting on this to me yesterday.
