Updated: New iPod Nano, iPod Classic and iPod Touch Reviewed in Depth
There is a lot of hype out about the new iPod Nano and the next generation of the iPod (now called iPod Classic). Ars Technica gives an in depth review of the new products – and they aren’t very impressed.
No information yet on the new iPod Touch as it isn’t being shipped yet, but once I find a good, unbiased review on it I’ll be sure to let you know.
I’m kind of disappointed by the results of the review. I was looking forward to the new devices and it seems they are a bit of a let down. A big detractor is that the video out function has been locked down. I always thought that was an awesome which allowed you to watch your shows on a regular TV while on holiday.
I may just have to take my own advice on this one and not buy the first generation. It isn’t really a first generation (6G iPod and 3G Nano), but the changes are dramatic enough that it could be considered a new product. I’ll just wait for a firmware update or two and see if it’s made any better.
UPDATE: Looks like a 1.0.1 firmware update released today fixes the biggest complaint about the iPod Classic and iPod Nano — the UI speed has been greatly increased.
Also, as promised, an Ars Technica review of the iPod Touch. It’s a more favorable review – but with some caveats.
It looks like the general rule still applies – wait a bit before buying a new gadget. The kinks usually get worked out after a few updates.
