BACKUP! Or This Could Happen To You!
Baratunde Thurston has written a blog post which has been picked up by Reddit and Digg. That isn’t the main reason to look at it. The main reason is that it’s a story about backups. Digital backups and just how often the “unlikely” can happen.
“Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10.”
– Terry Pratchett
Take a look at what his loss means and think about how much the same situation would mean to you. Don’t you think maybe you should spend some time and a few bucks to setup a backup system?
I have a pretty decent solution for myself and detailed some options in a previous post, but there are many options out there.
Very popular right now is using the online backup service Mozy. It’s a simple remote backup solution that works for pretty much anyone with a broadband connection. Combine that with periodic backups of your most important things to an external drive (especially a RAID device or NAS) and you’ll be pretty dang safe.
Don’t loose your precious memories now that they are all digital. Digital makes it easier to protect your stuff so take advantage of it.

back-up or pay-up…simple 40gb IDE laptop hard drive to be recovered with Drive Savers $2,500 BONES!! My company has done this 3 times this year…it adds up.
I wonder how this remote backup Mozy works with bloated PST 1.5GB files and huge data transfers over broadband. If it’s somewhat fast and secure, you couldn’t ask for much more. Even when using an external drive you have to mirror it to your local disk drive or have dual externals. cause if your keeping all your data on one external it’s no diffrent then keeping it on your root drive…and if it crashes…then your SOL (South of Lawrence)
All I know is never buy a Hitachi…I have had 9 of these drives fail in dell laptops over the last 6 months….but then again when a company has a site for what a head-crash sounds like that might be a sign that your products are crap. — http://tinyurl.com/4rn99 (edited URL for size)
I love those sounds! That cracks me up.
